S O T T O  V O C E

Sotto Voce is a musical cue calling on the performer to play softly, literally “under the (dominant) voice”. Drawing on forgotten Baroque compositions for theorbo and through the disarming power of gentleness, we suggest an alternative logic to that of spectacle and certainty : how might tenderness act as resistance? How might forgotten music and silenced gestures reclaim their presence ?

Here, dance and music intertwine to expose publicly what is usually overlooked or too quiet to matter.

Sotto Voce reveals ways to consider delicacy as powerful means of change. And entice its audience to consider vulnerability as a tour de force.

Choreographic composition

The piece begins close to the ground with sculptural postures—crouching, lying, sitting, kneeling—vacillating between contact and separation: hands reaching, heads resting on shoulders. These sculptural postures, echoing baroque or romantic imagery, unfold through walking and shifting, revealing subtle variations in gesture and form. We see bodies in connection as movement, silence, and stillness punctuate their itinerant exploration, gradually intertwining to find verticality.

In the second half, the performers situate themselves in a more defined, static space.

The performers now engage in proximity. From verticality emerges a swirling motif, anticipating the musical refrain. Gestures arise: hands approach the face, fingers caress body parts and bodies turn on their own axes. Then, these gestures gain weight, resistance, and tension to unfold horizontally as well as vertically. The movement expands in expression and beyond simple upright posture. The duet evolves into hovers, lifts and high holds evoking the desire to fly away and to reach for the sky. The performers seek here to sublimate the intimate movements of everyday life: intertwining, carrying, gestures of attention.

The performance dissolves as it began, suggesting an open-ended intimacy. Carrying their dance and departing in the horizon, bringing perspective. Sotto Voce moves from gravity and immobility to spiraling, lifting, and expansive gestures, offering a duet of gentleness, empathy, and care.
